Tim’s Daily Bread Devotional 1.27.22 – The first united Methodist church in Fort Worth

Today’s Bible: Psalm 36: 5-9

5 Your steadfast love, O Lord, extends to the heavens,
your fidelity to the clouds.
6 Your righteousness is like a mighty mountain,
your judgments are like a great abyss;
you save people and animals alike, Lord.

7 How precious is your unwavering love, God!
All people can take shelter in the shadow of your wings.
8 They feast in the abundance of your house,
and water them from the river of your pleasures.
9 For with you is the source of life;
in your light we see light.

Tim’s pious reflection for today

How do you describe God’s nature? Over the centuries, people have used expanded language – poetry, metaphor and comparison.

The Book of Psalms in the Hebrew Scriptures is truly a songbook, a collection of songs to be sung. There are even instructions for song leaders and musicians in many psalms.

Psalm 36, our reading today, is a song of praise, describing God’s steadfast love, faithfulness, righteousness, judgment, and abundance of provision for humans and animals. This hymn of praise reminds me of another written almost 800 years ago by St. Francis of Assisi:

  1. All creatures of God and our King, raise your voice and sing with us, thank you! Hallelujah! O brother of the sun with a golden beam, O sister of the moon with a silver glow!

chorus: Oh thank you! Oh thank you! Hallelujah! Hallelujah! Hallelujah!

  1. 2. O brother of wind, air, clouds and rain, Of whom you sustain all creatures, O thank you! Hallelujah! You rise in the morning, rejoice in glory, Lights of the evening, find a voice!
  2. O sister of water, clear flows, Make music so that your Lord may hear it, Alleluia! Hallelujah! Oh brother, a fire that illuminates the night, providing warmth and improving eyesight.
  3. Dear mother earth, who from day to day, reveal the blessings on our journey, Hallelujah! Hallelujah! Flowers and fruits that grow in you, May the glory of God be shown to them too!
  4. All of you who are tender-hearted, Forgiving others, take your share, oh thank you! Hallelujah! You who have been carrying pain and sorrow for a long time, praise God and throw your care on Him!

I invite you to read and reflect on these words today with me in celebration and gratitude for God’s enduring love that is always with us, no matter our circumstances.

Hymn suggestion

“Love, divine, all love excellent”

Love is divine, everything loves excellence,
joy of heaven, come down to earth,
fix in us your humble dwelling,
all your faithful grace is crowned.
Jesus, you are all compassionate,
pure, unlimited love you are.
Visit us with your salvation;
enter every trembling heart.

Breathe, O breathe your spirit of love
into every problematic breast.
May all in you inherit us,
let’s find the promised vacation.
Take away the love of sin;
Alpha and Omega to be.
The end of faith, as its beginning,
let us free our hearts.

Come, Almighty, to deliver,
let us receive your whole life.
He came back suddenly, and never,
they never leave the temples again.
We would always bless you,
serve you as your hosts above,
pray and glorify you without ceasing,
glory in his perfect love.

Finish, therefore, your new creation;
let us be true and blameless.
Let us see your great salvation
perfectly renewed in you.
Changed from glory to glory,
until we take our place in paradise,
until we cast our crowns before you,
lost in wonder, love, and praise.
